Beware Of Housewarming SCAMS
This investigative report came out in our local news this week about scams targeting new homeowners. It's always a good idea to keep some healthy skepticism when confronted with a new situation.
Moving in to a new home puts a huge target on your back for marketers. New home, new neighborhood, etc., means you will be needed new local services, restaurants, furniture, decorations, or whatever. So marketers send out welcome packets with coupons, community schedules, and helpful maps to their restaurant. In all many of those offers are just regular marketing tools,
This TV report shows the sometimes nefarious side of things. In one segment they discuss a marketing company that wants to offer you gift cards, in exchange for your personal info ( so they can market more things to you). To me that's a no-go. I don't want more marketing ads. If you want to take that risk, it's probably not lethal. Just know that any piece of info you share, they WILL use. If you give your email, they WILL email you. (By 'they' I mean 'EVERYONE'.) If you give your phone number out, they WILL call you, probably multiple people every day. It's a huge hassle. My advice, use the coupons that look good, but that only require you to show up and present a coupon. Don't call an access number, because then they will have your number.
The other segment in this report shows some straight up scams you might get as a new homeowner. Scary looking, artificially official looking documents stating that there is a problem with your mortgage or insurance and you need to send some money. Don't give anyone access to your banking information, and before you do anything, check with your actual mortgage company, not some mysterious third party.
In either case, prepare to be inundated with stuff when you move into your new home. Just be wise, okay?
